Here are some interesting marking gages I've found

 

the first is a Christian Sholl gage..a four arm marking gage..

 

 

 

all work independantly of each other..

but all can be locked in by the one thumbscrew

 

patented March 8, 1884 patent number 41,867

and not the least bit awkward

 

nice quality tool from days gone by

 

the next is a Phillips scribe morticing and marking gage

patented 1867. one arm with two adjustable brass heads

nice rosewood arm, and still does what it was made to do
